About Communication

what we expect to learn from this project:

- communicate a bunch of information in a concise manner
- divide group work but also work together efficiently
- autonomous learning
- become more conversational
- practice both speaking and writing skills
- being creative using a foreign language by working in our limited knowledge
- thinking in terms of Japanese structures
- finding time to coordinate our busy schedules to work on our project outside of class

my definition of communication:

To me, communication is the effective bridging of differences through honesty that results in a mutual, larger understanding. Effective communication requires understanding that which sets you apart from others and being willing to reconcile these differences through a process of meeting in the middle.

We are in the same group! I definitely feel like I'm already learning many of the points we mentioned in the first part of this blog post. This project has been presented as a challenge to us but I am thoroughly enjoying working as a team and figuring out how to communicate effectively in Japanese.
In the second part, I like how you mentioned honesty. I didn't really think about that. You make a great point, effective communication definitely involves honesty. For example if the news reported false information there would be chaos!
Let's continue working as hard as we have!

I agree with the points your presented regarding what you expect to learn from this project. Like you mentioned, one of the challenges in this project is being creative and effectively communicating our ideas using our limited vocabulary. One thing that didn't really think about that you mentioned in your definition of communication is honesty and that being honest and open with the people you are working with is key to effective communication and compromise.

I can't wait to watch your video! Good luck!

    1. Thank you! Without honesty, even if the communication seemed to be effective, it would be deeply and intrinsically flawed. We all have to be real about out opinions and feelings in order to move forward.

    わたしたちのグルプはおなじですね!このポストはとてもおみしろいです。
Not only did I find it very interesting that you mentioned honesty, like Hoffman さん and Liao さん commented, but also how you said that differences are important for communication. I could not agree more, some people would say that to communicate we have to get to the same place first, but I agree that communication starts when we are in different “places” with our mentalities and opinions, and through communication we reach a middle ground, which might not be a shared opinion but at least an understanding of the other party’s point of view.
Glad we’re on the same team!

    1. I like how you rephrased it as "might not be a shared opinion but at least an understanding of the other party's point of view" – that's absolutely what I meant! Communication isn't about having a homogenous view, but about understanding and validating other opinions.

  5. Hi Choate-san,
    "autonomous learning." I like that!!
It is one of the ultimate goals and objectives of language learning, and I'm pretty sure that this project you guide you to the autonomous mind.
As for communication, I am very happy that you are aware of the need to accept/reconcile cultural differences to understand other people. I hope you will communicate with your audience through the podcasting. I'm looking forward to watching your project. Good luck.
